FIX WHAT’S GONE WRONG IN AMERICA

FDR’s New deal and LBJ’s Great Society, the last bold innovations in U.S. history, gave us the nation’s most prosperous, democratic forty years ever. FDR’s motto still applies: Try something; if it doesn’t work try something else. The atavists succeeded in 2024 only because low-wage voters have been losing income ever since Reagan restored “trickle-down” in 1980. To win back their votes, give them what they so desperately need—as follows.

 

1. GUARANTEE THAT EVERY AMERICAN CAN AFFORD TO LIVE IN AMERICA

-Eight economic rights will be guaranteed in a new constitutional amendment.

-Every American will be paid a living wage adequate to purchase all economic rights.

-Any American may earn as much more than living wage as personal ability enables.

-Federal government will maintain a strong safety net to protect all Americans from disasters.

-Every federal agency will be adequately funded to fully carry out its assigned mission.

 

2. RESTRAIN PRICES WITH A 5% RULE TO ENFORCE GENUINE COMPETITION

-All unavoidably natural monopolies (pipeline-, fixed rail-, wire-infrastructure, et cetera) shall be placed under strict governmental controls. No other monopolies shall be permitted to exist in the USA.

-All other commercial entities controlling more than 5% of U.S. market for anything each sells, respectively, shall be subdivided into new enterprises each of which shall control less than 5% of market.

-All firms doing business in the United States shall be 100% owned by Americans. Foreign owners cannot be expected to prioritize American interests, therefore foreign ownership is prohibited.

 

3. ENSURE AVAILABILITY OF JOBS FOR ALL WORKING-AGE AMERICANS

-New businesses created by The 5% Rule will vote their choice to proceed as 1) a worker-owned co-op dedicated to meet consumer needs and serve the public good or 2) a small entrepreneurship free to pursue private enterprise with minimal regulation. Government shall create additional jobs as needed.

-Co-op employee-owners may receive merit bonuses and raises; Entrepreneurs are on their own.

-Every young American who serves 3 years in the Service-to-America Corps shall be rewarded with a Life Opportunity Voucher (LOV) redeemable for college education, an equipped 200-acre farm, or entrepreneurial business startup.

 

4. FAIRLY DISTRIBUTE THE COSTS OF THE AMERICAN DREAM

-Graduated income taxes paid by every household will top out at 94% (the maximum in 1944) for those earning over $2 million annually; Every business’s taxes shall be calculated and billed by the IRS.

-Equivalent state laws will be incentivized as a condition of any (which means “any”) federal funding.

 

5. With wartime urgency, GOV’T SHALL LEAD PROJECTS THAT LACK BUSINESS INCENTIVE

-Decentralize smart-grid power generation by placing tube turbines along the banks of all big rivers.

-Launch small electric vehicles affordable by all within 2 years; End fossil fuel use within 5 years.                    .    -Under federal gov’t initiative, meet 100% of need for affordable housing nationwide within five years.

-Un-do 90% of the egregious damages inflicted on American society during 2025-2028.

 

6. FEDERALLY FUND TEACHING OF DEMOCRACY, CIVICS AND HUMAN VALUES

-Teach civic values and responsibility from first through twelfth grades, plus four years of college.

-Require candidates for all public offices to pass a qualifying exam for the office they seek.

-Require 100% registration and voting, with fines for unexcused failure to vote in any federal election.
